BorgWarner S362SX-E Dyno Test w/.91 Turbine Housing Vs. .70 Turbine Housing

BorgWarner S362SXE Dyno Results

This time we tested the BorgWarner turbos S362SX-E diesel turbo with a T4 .91 A/R non-wastegated turbine housing and a 68mm turbine. We have previously tested it with a .70 housing, making about 545hp. We will compare the two tests and see how they compare. Will the gains in horsepower be worth a loss in spool?

As usual, our tests will run from 1300 – 3200rpm with just the weight of the dyno drums. We will then do a roll-on test from 1800 – 2800rpm with 5,000lb load. Lets see how it does.

Lets check out the peak power numbers:

Max Power results of SXE362 Test 1

It looks like we picked up a little power. In the previous dyno test with the .70 housing, the Borg 362SX-E made 545hp and here it looks like it’s making about 560hp. Small gain. Now, lets see how the torque looks:

This time it looks like it came in just a hair over 1200 ft/lbs of torque on this truck. However, it did feel like it had more lag than the .70. Lets see how they compare:

This is interesting. The .91 A/R housing is definitely slower than the .70 and gains just a bit of power. For us, we like the .70 better because it comes on so much faster. However, the .91 does this work with way less boost. With the .70, we had about 50 psi of boost. On this S362SX-E setup, we are only making about 35 psi.

Let’s see if the loaded test is any different.

The test 2 results are in and it looks like peak power is coming in around 555hp on this run, which means we lost about 10hp. This is very likely due to the heat of the engine from these back to back runs.

Max torque looks to be coming in around 1260.

Let’s look at the overlay from the .70 test.

BorgWarner 362SXE Test two dyno comparison

We gained just a bit of power and lost torque when comparing the two tests. The biggest difference here is spool-up. Even though the top end carries better with the .91 housing, on the BorgWarner S362SX-E, the .70 spools dramatically faster. This illustrates how good of a match the .70 is with the 68mm turbine wheel.

    Hi,
I would love to see a direct comparison between a Fleece VGT Cheetah and a BD VGT Screamer and anyone else who has a turbo in this category. This way one can get a complete picture which way to go when the turbo time comes… 2nd gen swap or VGT replacement.
    Thanks.
