This time, we’re testing the BorgWarner SXE364 with a .70 housing and the popular 68mm turbine wheel. We want to see how its spool up and power compare to the SXE362. Like all SXE turbos, this has the 360 thrust bearing, a billet compressor wheel, and a larger compressor cover. Like all our tests, we will do a 1300 to 3200 rpm unloaded test, and then a 5,000lb loaded run from 1800 to 2800rpm. Then, we will compare it to the SXE362.
Dyno Test 1: 1300 – 3200rpm Unloaded
Power on this test peaked around 582 – 583hp at about 2500rpm.
Everything about this setup and test is identical to the test we did on the BorgWarner SXE362 and we picked up about 20 horsepower. In the overlay with the 362, you can see how the increased compressor flow affects the performance of the SXE364.
The 362 spools quicker, which you can feel in the truck. You can also see how much better the 364 holds the torque curve, due to the increased compressor flow. Not a big difference overall, but the 364 definitely holds the torque better.
Dyno Test 2: 1800 – 2800rpm 5000lb Loaded
Peak horsepower looks like about 571hp and torque broke the 1300lb mark at 1381lbs.
The horsepower holds nice and flat and stays over 530hp all the way up to 2800 rpm. By time, you’re only looking at about 3.5 seconds to reach peak power.
By comparison, the 362 comes on faster again. In this test, you can definitely feel that difference as well. Again the torque holds out better on the BorgWarner SXE364, giving a little power advantage.
So, now the question is, which turbo is better since the 364 wins up top and the 362 wins in the bottom. When we look at the averages (run 1 is the 364), the 362 makes more average power than the SXE364. However, these numbers are close, and the difference could be time of day, or some other small factor. In the end it all depends on your goals. Both of these turbos will tow well and make good power. If towing is more important to you go for the SXE362, if towing is important but power is more so,than the SXE364 might be just what you are looking for.
