We’re revisiting the BorgWarner S369SX-E turbocharger. You might remember we tested this turbo a little while back and we weren’t happy with the results. The truck we originally tested it on was not set up to show the real potential of this turbo. This time, we threw it on Will’s race truck so we could throw some big fuel at it! We wanted to show you what this turbo is really capable of.
We ran two tests, just like the last time. The first is a 1,300 – 3,200rpm test with no applied load, only the weight of the dyno drums. The second is run from 1,800 – 2,800rpm with the dyno drums loaded.
BorgWarner S369SX-E Test 1: 1,300 – 3,200rpm Unloaded
Test one produced peak power of 748 horsepower, torque topped out at 1,538 ft/lbs.. This is an amazing result considering the cost of the turbo! We were much happier than the first time we tested the 369.
By time, starting at 1,300rpms, this turbo takes a while to get up to peak power. Any turbo that can support this type of power will not do well at low RPM. From the start of the pull to peak torque is 10.69 seconds. Make sure not to do a roll on race from 1300 RPM with this turbo!
Notice the difference a tuned truck makes versus just throwing this turbo on a less modified vehicle. Will’s truck made more than 108 more horsepower than the original test. Power requires 2 things, fuel and air. If you skimp on either the power will never be what you are hoping for.
BorgWarner S369SX-E Test 2: 1,800 – 2,800rpm Loaded
On the loaded run, peak power was down a bit. This usually happens on the second test as the engine is warmer and the intercooler is heat-soaked. This time, horsepower peaked at 721. Torque topped out at 1,600 ft/lbs. The torque is higher because the load spooled the turbo earlier and harder. This is definitely a proven performer with the .80 housing on a T3 manifold.
Overall, this test is much better and much more in line with what we would expect from the S369SX-E. We generally plan on 7-8 horsepower per pound of air moved. This turbo moves just shy of 100 lbs./min. So our numbers are right in line with what we would expect this turbo to be capable of.
