Dyno Testing the BorgWarner SXE362 with an .83 Turbine Housing

This time we are testing the the BorgWarner SXE362 with a T4 .83 turbine housing. As with past tests, we are going to run this turbo under the same conditions: an unloaded run, and a run with the dyno loaded with 5,500lbs.

The results of the first test are in. Peak horsepower came in at about 550hp at right around 2400rpm. This is pretty good power out of this turbo. Peak torque for the SXE362 on the unloaded run came in right around 1225lbs.

When we overlay the same BorgWarner turbo with the test from the .70 housing, we can see how different housings affect this turbo.

The .70 comes on a little quicker and makes a bit more horsepower and torque. The .83 housing carries the 362SXE a little further, but by the time it’s really getting happy, it seems to be outside of its efficiency ranges. The stock head might not be able to benefit as much as something that can handle higher RPMs. We are liking the .70 housing better at this point.

On the time graph, we can see how long the BorgWarner 362SXE takes to go from roll on to peak torque. Our graphs show it takes about 4.30 seconds to reach peak torque. It also appears that we lost a little power, which is probably due to heat. Peak power came in at 536hp.

When we overlay the .70, it destroys the .83. Because the .70 spools up much quicker, you are getting more torque than the .83 housing.

We also threw the .91 in just to see how all three compare. The .83 and .91 housings definitely move the power curve to the right since they take longer to spool. There isn’t a huge power difference between the three housings.

And finally, we have the average power numbers for the three housings we have tested on the 362. The .83 averages 405; the .70 averaged 463; and the .91 turbine housing produces 396 average. As you can see the .70 is producing the highest average power numbers for these three housings on the BorgWarner 362SXE.
