Control Smoke and EGT with AFC LIVE

AFC LIVE Closeup

We get a lot of questions about AFC LIVE and today, we’re going to answer some of them. In this post, we’ll be covering what an AFC LIVE tuner is for your truck, how it works, and why you need one.

What is AFC LIVE and How Does it Work?

AFC LIVE is an in-cab fuel tuner developer for p-pumped trucks. It works by connecting it in-line between the engine (the boost source) and the AFC (which controls your fueling). The valving inside the AFC LIVE tuner allows you to modulate the air signal for smoke control, EGT control, and overall horsepower control.

Looking at the AFC LIVE you’ll notice a few things. First, you can see a knob labeled “Power”. This will set your power level. You can think of it as an infinitely adjustable fuel plate.

The smaller black knob controls the fuel rate. This allows you adjust how fast the power comes in. The gauge on the AFC LIVE unit is NOT a boost gauge. This gauge tells you the modulated AFC signal after it has gone through all the valving in the AFC LIVE unit.

On the side, you’ll find a black toggle switch. This switch allows you to bypass all of the valves in the control unit and receive an unmodulated signal between the engine and the AFC.

How to Tune a Truck with AFC LIVE

Next, we’re going to walk you through tuning an engine with AFC LIVE. This is a 1995 Dodge Ram with a 160 pump, 5×14 Power Drive Diesel injectors, a Borg Warner K27 turbo, and stock delivery valves. This truck also has a 6-speed manual transmission.

First, we’re going to simulate smoke control in a city environment. In this test, the power knob is all the way up, so all the change seen at this point is just from the fuel power adjustment. This is producing too much smoke, especially at the mid-range.

To fix this, we’re going to turn the fuel rate knob down. If you go too far, you’ll notice that there is nearly no smoke, but also that the truck is a little lethargic, so we’ll give it a bit back. We like it with just a bit of haze, but not smoke, and we feel like this is there.

Next, we’re going to demonstrate EGT control on the highway. At full fuel, things get a little toasty and we pegged the 1,500 degree gauge. So, we dial down the power knob and see if we can get the gauge down to 1,200 degrees. We set the max fuel gauge to 15psi and still get 1,500 degrees. At 7psi, we max out at 1,100 degrees. We give it a bit more to hit 12 psi on the AFC LIVE and that maxed us at 1,250 degrees.

AFC LIVE Gives You Unlimited Fuel and Smoke Control

As you can see from these tests, AFC LIVE gives you both fuel and EGT control. Pick one up for your p-pumped truck today. with the Max travel mods and the AFC live, I had better control, from the cab, over my fueling. When I added PDD injectors, delivery valves, gov springs and used their simple kit and technique to advance my pump timing to 18 deg…the fun factor went through the roof…..whole different truck!!! I now have smoke less power to pass at will and no loosing speed pulling my loaded gooseneck up the hills in Eastern KY. 1995 p-pump 12 valve, auto, (originally 160HP) stock motor..This is a MUST HAVE mod for your p-pumped truck!

I would like to be more informed on chips for my 1999 24 valve diesel for more power for pulling or just for performance.
