Power Driven Diesel Beehive Springs VS Ebay Valve Springs Test

Beehive spring vs ebay spring

We had a customer from Hawaii contact us and send us some 75lb overstock valve springs they purchased on Ebay. We tested them against a true 60lb overstock Cummins beehive spring to see what the real seat and open pressures are. Read on for the tests and results.

Setting Up the Valve Spring Tests

First, a stock Cummins spring takes about 90lbs of pressure to open. A 60lb over stock spring requires 60lbs more pressure than stock, so about 150lbs. For this test, we’re using a spring pressure testing gauge to see how accurate the weights on these springs are.

Setting a Cummins Valve Spring Baseline

We started this test with a Cummins 60lb over stock valve spring. We tested it as a baseline in our gauge and it tested out at about 155lbs of seat pressure. We will refer to these baselines as we test the compression on the Ebay springs.

Testing the Ebay Valve Spring

After we tested our Power Driven Diesel springs, we put the Ebay valve spring in the gauge. We set it and installed it at the factory height, .19250. With this test, we’re getting about 159lbs – 160lbs in our gauge. From this, we’re not quite reading a true 75lb over stock with this spring.

We also noticed that this spring isn’t a true beehive shape. The shape of the spring is important because it helps with harmonics and spring performance at high RPMs. The Ebay springs have a standard cylindrical shape all the way up. It also doesn’t have as nice of a finish, like they skipped the finish polish or bead blasting.

Beehive spring vs ebay spring

The first test we put the spring under was to add .100”  lift. With this lift, we get to 165lbs of pressure. The true 60lb spring was a 170lbs, or 5lbs ahead. At .200”, the Ebay spring is at 182lbs and moving a little farther behind the PDD springs. When we pushed it to .300 compression, we get to just under 200lbs, while the 60lb spring reaches 212lbs.

We continued to push to .500” lift and ended at 260lbs for the Ebay spring and the 60lb over stock spring was 262lbs. From this test, our initial conclusion is that these are imported 60lb over springs relabeled as 75lb beehive springs.

Valve Spring Test Conclusions

We have no idea on reliability of these springs. We think that the Cummins 60lb springs are worth the additional $40 in price to ensure reliability and performance in your truck.
