Installing a governor spring in your stock Cummins p-pump is not difficult. With the right tools and a little bit of time, anyone can do it. We’ll walk you through four simple steps to replacing your governor springs:

  1. Remove battery cable, horn, shutdown solenoid, and actuator arm
  2. Remove old governor springs (Leave large outer spring in place)
  3. Install new governor springs (Install them as a single unit for ease)
  4. Repeat for second set of springs and reassemble engine parts

Step One: Removing Engine Parts

First you need to remove a few engine parts so you can access the governor spring on your truck. You will need to remove the battery cables, then the air horn. After the air horn comes off, you will need to remove the shutdown solenoid by removing two 8mm bolts and a pin.

After the solenoid is off, need to remove a small actuating arm. Simply loosen the bolt on the pivot and remove. Be careful not to lose the small keyway that is in the assembly. After the arm comes off, you will need to cut a thin wire that goes in front of the plug where your governor springs are housed.

Step Two: Removing the Governor Springs

You will need to access your governor springs by removing the plug that covers them. This is done with a 22mm socket. Once you have access to the springs, simply remove them. Start with a flathead screwdriver, and once things are loose use a magnet to ensure nothing falls into the pump. In order, you will remove the following:

  • Locking nut
  • Top cap
  • Small spring
  • Middle spring
  • Spring base and shims
NOTE: The large outside spring stays in place

Step Three: Install the New Springs

Once all the old springs are out, the next step is to install the new springs. The easiest way to do this is to install them as one assembly. Once the base, shims, and springs are in place, the next step is putting the factory top cap back into place and then the lock nut. Use the magnet again to get things tight, then your flathead screwdriver to secure.

Note: When tightening your lock cap in place, tighten until you hear three clicks. This will properly seat your springs in place.

Step Four: Repeat for the Next Set of Springs

You’re now done with the first set of springs. Now, rotate the engine until a second set of springs appear in the window. Once they appear, repeat the process for the second set of springs. Reassemble the arm, shutdown solenoid, air horn, and battery cables. You’re done.
